
School Green Program: Seeing a Sustainable Future
To learn about environment not by memorizing yet another text book, but by ‘doing’, the aim of the Green School Program, repost by Imus City mayor, Emmanuel L. Maliksi.
The City Government of Imus has been committed in promoting a healthy environment. The schools in Imus will support its endeavors in achieving the goals and aspirations for the benefit of the city and its constituents.
A Green School is a resource-efficient building one that uses little water, optimizes energy efficiency, minimizes waste-generation, catches and recycles water and provides healthier space for its occupants as compared to a conventional building.
It protects the environment, keep teachers and students healthy, and promote environmental literacy. It significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, improve student and teacher health and enhance student motivation.
What to start in promoting this Green School Program? Bukandala Elementary will surely support the City of Imus goal to achieve a healthier environment. Thus it starts with,
WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS
The best way to reduce waste and lower waste disposal costs is implementing a recycling program. School’s recycling bins are strategically placed in visible area-eating areas, bathrooms, canteen and common outdoor spaces. One of the school’s policy is ‘Basura ko, Uwi ko’ and inside the classroom different garbage bins are labelled as ‘ Nakakalason’, ‘Nabubulok’, ‘Nareresiklo’and ‘Latak’.
ANTI-POLLUTION CAMPAIGN AND GREENING PROGRAM
The school has the aquaponics system, organikong gulayan to ensure that the greening program will be practiced and utilized. Cars and other kinds of vehicles are not allowed inside the school premises. Clean-Up drive implementation also educates the students, know the importance of clean environment in their lives and make cleaning be a habit.
PAPER CONSERVATION AND REDUCTION PROGRAMS
Aside from Paper Conservation Tray of the school, students do the Paper Mache Products like Candy and Bread Tray, vase and pen holder. Papers are also used to make notepad and Eco-Notebook.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CONSERVATION
One of the main goal of the school is to reduce the consumption of electricity. This is the main concern of the Green School Program and so the school sees to it that it strengthens its programs on indigenous and renewable energy resource development, energy efficiency and conservation not only to reduce its dependence on imported fuels for its energy need but also for sustainable development.
